Sokka and Katara’s detective skills are a fine bulk of the episode, but this chapter should be focused more on Aang’s thoughts on his past lives contradicting with his monk teachings. The only real difference this time is Aang is being jailed and subjected to supposed crimes caused by one of his previous lives who he eventually calls upon to help him- or rather attempts to do so as Avatar Kyoshi explains the creation of the island named in her honor and ultimately pleads guilty for what she believes was a course of rightful actions against an Earth Kingdom dictator. The notion of towns and cities being against the Avatar is something we have seen time and time again throughout the series. While the background for Avatar Kyoshi is intriguing, Avatar Day is a whole lot of talk rather than actual exploration for what is being told. On its own, however, it is not able to create the strong roots it importantly produces. As part of a series, The Swamp is an excellent long-term addition that provides context to the show’s mythology. Aang learns about how everything in the world is connected, a theme that plays a major role down the line as it begins to prepare him to unlock his various chis needed to fight the Fire Lord, but the payoff never lands until later episodes. Sokka and Katara never receive the opportunity to explore what they traumatically saw- at least in this chapter. There are some upsetting character moments for Sokka and Katara that stand out in this episode as they each see an important loved one they have lost, yet they are overshadowed by Aang’s teachings and visions of a girl with a flying boar.
THE AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER SEASON 2 SERIES
Here, dead means dead.The way in which The Swamp brings a level of spirituality to Avatar: The Last Airbender is not the most engaging episode of Book 2: Earth, but it does provide important characterization to the series as we learn more about the Avatar’s spiritual connection with the physical world. As Yang explains, " The world of Avatar is not the Marvel universe. However, ultimately Jet's death was left final. An Avatar Extra factoid available on the Avatar: The Last Airbender DVDs makes the note, " For the record: Jet is dead." Smellerbee, Longshot, Sneers and the other Freedom Fighters returned without Jet in the three-part comic "The Promise." A note from writer Gene Luen Yang in the annotated version of the story says that an early draft of the comic actually included Jet, because he thought the death was ambiguous enough that he could be brought back. Though Jet's death was indeed left unclear in the episodes that aired on Nickelodeon, he is unfortunately dead in canon. die?" Sokka replies, " You know what, it was really unclear." After Jet's "death" scene in the play, Zuko (who was not present during the real Jet's final moments) is very confused, asking, " Did Jet just. Once the mourning period was over, Avatar: The Last Airbender actually poked fun at the scene in "The Ember Island Players." In this episode, Team Avatar attend a play that presents a dramatic reenactment of their adventures. Team Avatar was able to evacuate the village, and they parted ways with Jet and the Freedom Fighters on bad terms. Though he first seemed like a heroic rebel (whom Katara quickly developed a crush on), it became clear that Jet's grudge against the Fire Nation had corrupted him. He ordered the Freedom Fighters to blow up a dam that would flood a nearby village, drowning not only Fire Nation soldiers but Earth Kingdom civilians as well. After witnessing the deaths of his parents at the hands of Fire Nation soldiers when he was very young, Jet had developed a fierce hatred of the Fire Nation. Jet made his first appearance in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1. Jet's death was later confirmed in the extras for the DVD release of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and when the Freedom Fighters returned in the sequel comic "The Promise," it was without their former leader.
Avatar: The Last Airbender had plenty of dark and upsetting moments, bu the animated Nickelodeon series had to stop short of explicitly killing off Jet, the leader of the Freedom Fighters, in season 2.
